Hyundai sued in Korea over inflated fuel economy claims

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

Hyundai remains in hot water in its home market after the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport alleged that the country's largest automaker, along with Ssangyong, misstated fuel economy numbers on some of its crossovers. Now, though, the country's consumers are going after Hyundai, with a lawsuit from 1,500 Santa Fe owners.

The suit was filed in Seoul Central District Court by a firm called Yeyul. Its spokesperson, Kim Woong, said the suit was a sign that angry consumers could go after the manufacturer if they're wronged by a company's product.

"It is essential that as many affected consumers as possible take part in this lawsuit to show not just the carmaker but the rest of the companies in Korea that you can get a red card if you mess with your customers," Kim told Bloomberg.

Yeyul and its clients are targeting 1.5 million won (about $1,500) in compensation for owners of the Santa Fe models built between May 2012 and June 2014. It's unclear if Hyundai will settle for a lesser amount, as the $1,500 figure is considerably higher than the what the company compensated American owners with, after copping to incorrect economy figures in US-market Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

370-Horsepower Hyundai Veloster Turbo – Pictures + Video

Hyundai and Fox Marketing Cars have teamed up to deliver the most powerful Veloster Turbo street machine ever. The car was seen at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

At the core of Fox Marketing’s engine was Hyundai’s 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder direct-injected T-GDI engine.

Fox added a number of advanced engine components to create an absolute beast.

Among those additions were a new 845 Motorsports turbo upgrade, BorgWarner EFR turbo, front-mounted intercooler, AEM water/methanol injection system, VP Racing 101-octane performance fuel and an ECU tune from SeoulfulRacing, all of which adds up to an impressive 370 horsepower.

The goal was to keep the Veloster Turbo concept close to the ground and flat when cornering at high speed, which was achieved by adding a UNIQ Performance strut brace, ImportShark chassis bracing and fully-adjustable ARK Performance coil-over suspension.

The car has incredible stopping power, thanks to the addition of WP Pro EX6 6-piston front calipers with carbon fiber ducting and 13.6-inch wavy-cut rotors.

The Veloster Turbo gets an aggressive styling with a number of exterior modifications that are in line with the changes made to the other areas of the car.

BASF created a hand-mixed paint called R-M Oynx HD Waterborne SkyAqua Pearl, to deliver an eye-catching exterior color.

An ImportShark front lip spoiler, Hyundai Genesis fog lights, and custom front and rear fascias round out the cool exterior changes.

Hyundai shows Walking Dead Veloster Zombie Survival Machine at Comic-Con

Hyundai Veloster Turbo made up for The Walking Dead tv show - front three-quarter view

The Walking Dead, the hit zombie apocalypse show on AMC, has enjoyed a marketing tie-in with Hyundai for two seasons now. If you've watched the show, you'd no doubt seen Rick Grimes, his sociopath-in-training son Carl and emerging hero Glenn Rhee avoiding the dead behind the wheel of a light-green Hyundai Tucson. That relationship expanded beyond the show when Hyundai brought an Elantra Coupe-based Zombie Survival Machine to last year's San Diego Comic-Con.

For this year's Comic-Con, the new Zombie Survival Machine is just a touch faster, funkier and deadlier. Based on a Hyundai Veloster Turbo and built by Galpin Auto Sports to decapitate as many Walkers as possible, this four-door hatch has been heavily modified. The headlights, taillights and windows are all protected with a combination of wrought iron and chainlink fencing. There's also plenty of armor on the body panels.

Passive zombie killing features abound, like the "horde plow" on the front bumper and sawblade grille. But by and large, the majority of the Veloster Turbo Zombie Survival Machine's offensive power comes from a combination of firearms and chainsaws. A .50-caliber machine gun is mounted on the roof, along with a pair of assault rifles on the hood. Each door features blades along the base and a machine gun. Melee weapons can be found in the back, including a spiked baseball bat or katana.

We see a few issues with the Veloster Turbo ZSM. Clearly, the creators have never read Max Brooks' excellent book, World War Z, otherwise they'd know that flame throwers (of which we counted three) are ineffective against the dead, as are rapid-fire weapons. Our nerdy minds aside, this is a pretty cool one-off concept from one of the very best shows on television. But if you think you can do better, Hyundai has set up an app for fans to design their own Zombie Survival Machines. The winning entry will get their car built and put on display at New York Comic-Con in October. Now, if you'll excuse us, we need to see if we can retrofit our long-term Veloster Turbo into a Zombie Survival Machine.

Hyundai is in the final stages of moving into its new vehicle test center in Nurburgring, Germany.

The iconic track will serve as the permanent base for Hyundai, and will be the perfect place to put all of their vehicles through their paces.

The test track has become well known for being one of the toughest circuits in the world.

The project is expected to be completed by August 2013, at which time it will be ready to meet all of Hyundai’s needs.

The center will take up four floors and 3.622 m2, and will include workshops, office space, and a VIP hospitality area. The exterior glass and metallic finish will be one that is totally unique.

The new facility will serve as a natural complement to the European R&D facility, located in Russelsheim, Germany, already owned by Hyundai.

That particular facility was opened back in 2013 and is home to the company’s European powertrain, tuning and evaluation divisions.

The proximity to the Nurburgring facility will mean that each of those divisions will be able to run a greater number of vehicle assessments annually.

That includes Hyundai’s extremely rigorous “accelerated durability tests” which can simulate 180,000 km of all condition, sever driving in just a few weeks.

The results delivered there provide invaluable data across a number of different parameters.

What Hyundai Says About The New Vehicle Test Center

Allan Rushforth, Senior Vice President and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe, said that quality is one of the core values of Hyundai, as it is what most often delivers customer satisfaction.

He went on to talk about the Nurburgring test center and how crucial a part it will play in being able to consistently deliver high levels of quality on every vehicle development project.

He also said that the ability to increase testing capacity will mean that the customer will truly be able to benefit from improved quality and performance.

That additional testing capacity will mean that Hyundai will be able to conduct accelerated durability tests on 11 different vehicles, all while assessing steering, suspension, ride and handling characteristics to produce set-ups suited to the preferences of European drivers.
